Job Description:
Our client, a global leading mining company, is seeking an Engineer Fire Risk Management who will be tasked with managing the fire risk portfolio at the company’s mine and the subsequent implementation of mitigation strategies towards managing and mitigating fire risk exposure by: Driving compliance to group strategies (AA fire prevention standard), Site fire risk management and reporting, and management and execution of site fire prevention strategies.
Responsibilities:
- Ensures site compliance to the company’s fire prevention Standard and Company Specifications.
- Ensures that all aspects relating to the Fire Risk Management Plan are duly researched, structured, implemented, reviewed and amended as required.
- Ensures that the site fire risk assessment is regularly reviewed and identified risks are adequately actioned by risk owners.
- Site owner of the Mandatory code of practice for fire prevention in mines.
- Leads the drafting committee in keeping the MCOP updated.
- Is the site liaison for the annual external fire risk review by GRC.
- Manages resolution of GRC risk findings with site fire risk owners.
- Implements sustainable strategies for the Inspection, Test, Maintenance program of installed fire detection and protection systems to ensure systems are ready to operate as designed.
- Is the site liaison for Level ll and Level III group ORA assurance audits.
- Manages resolution of audit findings with site fire risk owners.
- Conducts Level I self-assessments against the company Fire Prevention standard and manages resolution of risk findings with site fire risk owners.
- Ensures changes to plant and machinery that may affect the fire risk profile is assessed through the change management process.
- Manages the execution of the Inspection, Test, Maintenance program of installed fire detection and protection systems by internal and outsourced specialist resources.
- Ensures up to date Fire Risk Management and Emergency Response plans are in place in alignment with operational requirements.
- Leads investigations into site fire incidents and conducts root cause analysis to ensure understanding, protection and improvement of fire equipment to eliminate the occurrence of fires.
- Manages the fire systems maintenance contract and contractor
- Ensures adequate capital planning is in place for execution of fire prevention projects as dictated by the site fire risk assessment
- Prepares the monthly fire risk report to site management.
Requirements: Qualification and Skill
- Degree qualified (Mechanical Engineering)
- 3 years’ experience in an appointment in terms of Mine Health and Safety Act Section 12(1) responsible for fire prevention measures in a mine
- 3 years’ experience as an engineer managing fire risk in the mining environment, or
- Holder of GCC mines with at least 3 years’ experience carrying a 2.13.1 or 2.13.3.1 appointment
- Knowledge of the Mine Health and Safety Act
- Knowledge of Fire Engineering Standards with specific reference to NFPA/ FM Global and SANS standards
