Job Description:

The role is responsible for ensuring management and execution of blasting activities on an open pit PGM operation, ensuring that the all handling and use of explosives complies to MHSA and Explosives Act. The blasting superintendent shall ensure that he/she creates a conducive environment for employees to achieve excellent performance through continuous coaching and training.



  • The successful candidate will report to the Drilling and Blasting Manager
  • Managing drilling and blasting section so that planned blasting tons are achieved safely and cost effectively
  • Ensure compliance to charging qualities and correct bench practices to ensure that all blasting activities are executed safely without risk to health and safety
  • Manage blasting in close proximity to communities to reduce the impact of dust, noise and vibrations to nearby communities
  • To make sure all blocks are charged according to charging instruction
  • Ensure that blasting reports are prepared
  • Discuss production performance and line-up with the shift during shift change
  • Maintain high quality drilling and blasting standards to curb costs to achieve annual operating and capital budgets
  • Coordinate with technical departments to reduce ore contamination by applying correct blasting practices
  • Provide direct control of drilling operations which include resource and reserves, ore blending and equipment utilisation
  • Develop and execute shift strategy in order to achieve the daily planned target
  • Lead and supervise the blasting team
  • Ensure Risk Assessment is done before charging and blasting takes place
  • Blasting section to achieve good fragmentation by drilling accurately
  • Create and maintain good and healthy relationship with employees and contractors
  • Prepare and summarize progress reports for management

Requirements: Qualification and Skill

  • Grade 12
  • Blasting Certificate / Rock breaking equivalent MQA qualifications in Surface Mining
  • Diploma in Mining (NQF Level 6)
  • Mine Overseer Certificate; Certificate in Explosive Engineering
  • Certificate / Qualification in Supervisory/ Management (NQF level 4 – 160 credits)
  • Minimum of six (6) years operational blasting experience
  • Minimum of one (1) year mining management experience in a Superintendent capacity
  • Minimum of three (3) years mining management experience in a supervisor capacity
  • Minimum of two (2) years operational mining experience in an Operator capacity.
