Our client, a leading mining company operating an underground mining operation in Zambia, is seeking an experienced Shaft Mining Engineer to oversee the design, maintenance, and optimization of shaft systems and related infrastructure. This critical role involves managing shaft operations, ensuring safety and regulatory compliance, and driving operational efficiency in a challenging underground mining environment. The successful candidate will provide technical expertise, lead maintenance and engineering initiatives, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to support production goals while maintaining the highest safety and environmental standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Shaft System Management: Oversee the design, installation, and maintenance of shaft infrastructure, including winders, hoists, loading stations, ore conveyance systems, and ventilation systems, to ensure safe and efficient operations.
  • Maintenance Programs: Develop and implement preventative and predictive maintenance strategies for shaft equipment, winders, and underground infrastructure to maximize availability and extend asset life.
  • Engineering Design: Lead the design and implementation of shaft equipping projects, such as loading stations, water reticulation, electrical reticulation, and ventilation systems, ensuring compliance with engineering standards.
  • Safety and Compliance: Ensure adherence to Zambian mining regulations, safety standards, and company policies, fostering a safety-first culture and maintaining legal compliance for shaft operations.
  • Project Management: Manage capital projects related to shaft development and upgrades, from scoping and design to commissioning, ensuring timely and budget-compliant delivery.
  • Team Leadership: Mentor and lead a team of engineers, technicians, and maintenance personnel, promoting technical excellence, accountability, and knowledge sharing.
  • Asset Optimization: Implement defect elimination and failure mode analysis (FMEA) processes to reduce equipment failures and improve reliability of shaft systems and underground infrastructure.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Work closely with Mining Operations, Metallurgy, and Procurement teams to align shaft operations with mine planning and production targets, providing regular updates to senior management.
  • Technical Troubleshooting: Act as the primary technical advisor for shaft-related issues, employing a hands-on approach to resolve complex engineering challenges.
  • Continuous Improvement: Drive initiatives to adopt new technologies, automation, and process enhancements to improve shaft efficiency, safety, and sustainability.
  • Budgeting and Cost Control: Prepare and manage budgets for shaft maintenance and projects, implementing cost control measures while prioritizing safety and quality.

Requirements: Qualification and Skill

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Mining Engineering. A Master’s degree or relevant certifications (e.g., CMRP, Asset Reliability Practitioner) are advantageous.
  • Experience: 15–20 years in underground mining, with significant expertise in shaft systems, winders, and underground infrastructure maintenance, including 5–7 years in leadership roles.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar design software, and familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and data analysis tools.
  • Shaft Operations: Proven experience in shaft equipping, winder maintenance, and underground conveyance systems, with a strong understanding of ventilation and dewatering systems.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with Zambian mining regulations and eligibility for Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ) registration.
