Meet Martin Mapika – Senior Land Surveyor
What industry do you work in?
I am working in the Mining and Exploration industry at the moment.
What are your strengths?
I am a problem solver, failure is not an option (surveying wise).
What inspired you to get into this sort of industry?
The working conditions inspired me; my work rotation schedule is 8 weeks on and 3 weeks off and I am transported to and from home.
What is the most challenging aspect within your field of work?
The most challenging aspect in my field of work , I would say staying away from the family for 8 weeks, the environment does not accommodate for families.
How do you manage and overcome these challenges?
I am in constant communication on Skype for hours after work.
What has been the highlight of your career?
I have never done a Blunder in Surveying, not that I am lucky but I take things seriously every time, I am a likable person.
If somebody starts as a trainee / beginner within your line of work, what could they earn in salary?
Roughly US$1500.00
What can this person expect to earn after 10 years of experience?
Roughly US$4000.00+
What advice can you offer people who are in the same industry as you?
I advise my colleagues that in Surveying you do not take anything for granted and you need to pay attention to detail.

Where in Africa have you worked before?
I have worked in Zimbabwe, Botswana and Liberia
As you know, numerous African countries are being invested in due to their rich minerals. Which country within Africa do you think will be the next hot spot and why?
South Africa because the economy is growing and it’s a peaceful country.

I feel at home in Africa but of course I am very flexible to move to other continents.
