The Education System in Botswana

The education system in Botswana promotes democracy, development, self-reliance and unity.

The facts are:

In Botswana, Nursery schools and early learning centres are increasing in numbers, with roughly a fifth of fives-and-under attending pre-school.
Literacy among young people is high, with 95% of 15-24 year olds able to read and write.
Primary education is free from the age of six to 13 years and majority of the cost for secondary education is also funded by the country’s government.

Did you know that Botswana has developed a ten-year school programme (primary and junior secondary)? Combining academic subjects with vocational and practical skills, this development was influenced by Patrick van Rensburg, an educationalist who founded a series of technical colleges across the country. Senior secondary school involves a further two years of study and opens up the dream of attending University or college.

Diamond mining currently accounts for around one quarter of jobs in Botswana, either directly or indirectly. However, this number will decline in the future as deposits are depleted and mines have to be shut down or their capacity reduced. Botswana government officials embrace now more so than ever, how critical it is to diversify and consequently build up employment in other industries. Tourism is seen as an important growing sector of the economy in Botswana and already provides jobs for around a fifth of the country’s workforce.
