What it’s like working in the Financial Industry
Meet Augustina Madugu – a young female who specialises in the Finance Industry.
Augustina what industry do you work in?
I work in the Finance/Accounting /Auditing Sector, but I have recently completed a masters’ program In Development Studies.
What are your strengths?
I am versatile, and approach my work with professionalism, diligence and integrity.
What inspired you to get into the Financial Industry?
I was inspired to get into this industry because of my knack with numbers, great organisation and management skills, my desire to help people do things better, and the rewards that come with it.
What is the most challenging aspect within the Financial Industry?
The most challenging aspect especially when it comes to auditing is when clients/colleagues are unco-orperative because they think their work is audited as a result of being suspected of wrongdoing.
Another challenge has been combining work with studies.
How do you manage and overcome these challenges?
I manage these challenges by being tactful and explaining that the audit is to assist them to show how resources and funds had been utilised, and where necessary offer suggestions for future optimal resource management.
Having to deal with the combination of work and studies is challenging but I have managed to progress to the professional (final) stage of my ACCA qualification by developing my ability to multitask and manage my time efficiently.
What has been the highlight of your career since being involved in the Financial Industry?
So far the highlight of my career has been when I discovered an overpayment of approximately $100,000 to a client, and assisted to recover it.
I believe my hard work and achievement contributed to earn me a scholarship to do my masters’ degree in Australia.
If somebody starts as a trainee / beginner within your line of work, what could they earn in salary?
Approximately $500.00 to $1,000.00 per month; but it depends on location and core business of particular company
What can this person expect to earn after 10 years of experience?
About $5,000.00 to $10,000.00.
What advice can you offer people who are also working in the Financial Industry?
That they should exercise diligence and integrity, and work towards contributing to bringing change and making the world a better place.

Where in Africa have you worked before?
I have worked in Ghana,
As you know, numerous African countries are being invested in due to their rich minerals. Which country within Africa do you think will be the next hot spot and why?
Ghana, because of the new oil and gas discoveries and also there is a lot going on in mining and cocoa production.

Africa is naturally richly endowed, with proper harnessing and management, Africa can rise above poverty and lend to the rest of the world.
