Fastest mobile connection in Africa
The Internet has become an inescapable part of today’s society. It has infiltrated near every industry, making it an essential part of both daily and professional life. As of December 2017, there were 4,514,400 total Internet users in Africa. Africa’s Internet penetration rate is at 35.2%, falling under the world average of 54.4%. This statistic is most likely due to the fact that access to the Internet and technology is still an issue in many countries across the African continent.
Regardless, mobile access and usage is growing day to day across Africa. In Benin, Sierra Leone, Niger, and Mozambique, the number of internet users has more than doubled over the past year. Mobile speed is also quickly improving. Average mobile connection speeds increased by more than 30 % over the past year.
Africa’s internet connection and speed seems to be improving nicely. The Speedtest Global Index compares internet speed data from around the world monthly. Data for the Index comes from the hundreds of millions of tests taken by real people using Speedtest every month. To be included in the Index, countries must have more than 3,333 unique user test results for fixed broadband and more than 670 unique user test results for mobile in the reported month. Results are updated at the beginning of each month for the previous month. Based on this data, users can see both global and local speed averages across the world. The global download speed average is 23.54 Mbps, and the average global upload speed is 9.28Mbps. Here are the African countries with the fastest internet connections, based off Speedtest Global Index’s June 2018 data.
