How to Optimise Your LinkedIn Profile and Attract Hiring Managers
In the age of social media and AI, a CV and cover letter is still not enough to get you that call back. If you are job hunting or simply open to the right opportunity, your LinkedIn profile is often the first thing a recruiter or hiring manager sees. At CA Global Headhunters, we search LinkedIn daily to find talent across Africa and we can tell you that the difference between a profile that gets a message and one that gets scrolled past is rarely experience alone. It is how well the profile is presented. Your LinkedIn profile can become a magnet for recruiters. Keywords, posts, professionalism and other tricks can attract the right people to you.
Here is how to optimise your LinkedIn profile so the right recruiters or hiring managers find you and want to talk to you.
1. Start with a professional profile photo
Your photo is your digital first impression. Choose a recent, high-quality headshot where your face is clearly visible, the lighting is good and you look approachable. You don’t need a studio photoshoot but a clean background and a natural smile will do the job. Skip the group photos, holiday snaps and heavily filtered images.
2. Make your banner work for you
The banner behind your photo is prime space that most people leave as the default blue. Use it to reinforce your professional brand: your industry, your area of expertise, a tagline or a simple branded image. Make sure it looks polished and matches the rest of your profile.
3. Write a headline that does more than state your job title
Your headline appears in search results, comments and connection requests, so it has only a few seconds to earn a click. Instead of just “Finance Manager”, tell people what you do and the value you bring, for example “Finance Manager | Driving Cost Efficiency and Reporting Accuracy in Mining”. Include the keywords recruiters are likely to search for.
4. Use keywords throughout your profile
Recruiters search LinkedIn the way you search Google. If your profile doesn’t contain the terms they type in, you won’t appear. Think about the job titles, skills, tools, qualifications and industry terms relevant to the roles you want, and weave them naturally into your headline, About section, experience and skills. The key word is naturally. Stuffing keywords into every line reads badly and puts people off.
5. Tell your story in the About section
Your About section is your chance to show who you are beyond a list of roles. Open with a strong line, then summarise your career highlights, your strengths and what you are looking for next. Write in the first person and keep the tone professional but human. Finish with a clear call to action, such as inviting recruiters to get in touch or giving your preferred contact details. It makes you look approachable and makes reaching out easy.
6. Show results, not just responsibilities
Under each role, avoid copying and pasting your job description. Recruiters want to know what you achieved. Where you can, add numbers: the budget you managed, the team you led, the percentage by which you reduced costs or grew revenue, the number of projects delivered. Concrete results are far more convincing than generic statements, and they set you apart from other candidates with similar job titles.
7. Complete every section
An incomplete profile signals a lack of effort. Fill in your education, certifications, languages, volunteer work and any projects or publications. Treat LinkedIn like your CV, but with more room to show your personality. Every section is another chance to be found and to prove your value.
8. Choose your skills carefully and collect endorsements
Your top skills are displayed prominently, so pick the ones most relevant to the roles you are targeting. Endorsements and recommendations add credibility because they show that other people vouch for your abilities, not just that you say you have them. Ask former managers and colleagues for a short recommendation, and return the favour when someone has done good work.
9. Use the Featured section
The Featured section lets you pin the content you most want people to see first. This might be an article you have written, a presentation, a project or a certification. Add documents, links, images or videos to give recruiters tangible proof of your work. A profile with real work samples is far more memorable than one with text alone.
10. Customise your public profile URL
A personalised URL, ideally a variation of your name, looks more professional and is easier to share on your CV, email signature and business cards. It takes about two minutes, and it makes your profile look instantly more polished.
11. Be active on the platform
LinkedIn rewards people who show up. Share updates about your achievements, post industry insights, and comment thoughtfully on other people’s posts. Commenting is one of the simplest ways to get your name in front of new people and build your network. You don’t need to become an influencer. A few meaningful interactions each week keep you visible and show your expertise.
12. Keep it fresh
Your profile should grow with your career. Update it when you finish a project, earn a qualification, gain a new skill or change roles. Reviewing it every few months ensures it always reflects your best, most current self, so you are ready when an opportunity comes up.
