The movement started in the late 1800s, and by 1891 it had become an international public holiday in many countries.

South Africa came to the holiday on its own terms and its own terms were hard-won. In this country, Workers’ Day has been officially recognised since the first democratic elections in 1994, serving both as a celebration of workers’ rights and as a reminder of the critical role that trade unions, the Communist Party, and other labour organisations played in the fight against Apartheid.

That history cannot be separated from what we do. Because South Africa’s working classes were those most oppressed by Apartheid, the struggle for better working conditions and the struggle to overthrow systemic segregation became closely linked. The workplace was a frontline. Trade unions were not just negotiating bodies, they were instruments of liberation.
